Sam Terrell NYC - Lighting Designer

My name Sam Terrell (she/her), and I'm a professional lighting designer from San Diego, California. In my lighting, I focus in on intention, audience perception, emphasizing opposing character perspectives, and highlighting orchestrations.

For me, the most important part of a process is the attitude and envirnoment that we as creatives create. I believe that theatre is about creating light - both literally and metaphorically - and sharing that light with audiences who are eager to seek light for themselves. If we as creators don't find light and joy in our process, it undermines the essence of the work we do! Maintaining a positive attitude in the room is always at the forefront of my priority list, and kindness will always come first.

I am also a highly organized individual. I happen to have a love affair with paperwork, which is backed up with an Excel certification. Additionally, I am a highly proficient draftsperson.

I've has had the privilege of observing a variety of highly established lighting designers, including Heather Gilbert, Tyler Micoleau, Isabella Byrd, Justin Townsend, Japhy Weideman, Bradley King, Cory Pattak, and more. I take what I learned from them, and many more, in every project.

My likes include orange chicken, dressing far warmer than necessary, dogs of all kinds, fuzzy rugs, and the word “kabuki.” Dislikes include daylight light bulbs, coffee shops without enough tables, Ticketmaster fees, and food that is unexpectedly spicy.

In my spare time, you can find me dog sitting, at a cafe, or spending time with my lovely friends!
